R.I.P. BOB MITCHELL (1912-2009)

He was a silent movie organist at the LA Silent Movie Theater. He actually saw Phantom when it first showed and often plaid organ for Silent movies. He plaid right up until his death at the Silent Movie Theater in La. I had the pleasure of see him play for such movies as POTO, Nosferatu, Laugh Clown Laugh and many others. This is truly a loss to any silent movies fan. He never used sheet music he remembered all the scores cause he was there. I had the pleasure of talking with him many times and shared awesome stories. This is truly a tragedy. IF you want to see him in action type Bob Mitchell silent movies theater into youtube. You'll find him.

Cinefamily,

I have sad news. Our organist, Bob Mitchell, has passed on at the age of 96. I did not know Mr. Mitchell well, but I did have the pleasure of seeing him play many times over the past year and a half. Mr. Mitchell, who started playing at the Pasadena Playhouse at the age of only 12 years old, had actually played for silent films in the '20s. It was a pleasure and a privilege to witness someone who wasn't just a master at his craft, but was a human portal to another time. There will be wonderful silent musicians continuing the tradition of live, improvised accompaniment, but there was a certain unforgeable authenticity that comes from not simply recreating another time, but being of it. Bob's entire musical background and earliest memories lent a texture to his performance that was quite unique; his musical quotations, his sense of humour, his reference points were all of the era. He knew and remembered the songs and themes that were contemporaneous with the films he accompanied, and would weave them into the scores at natural points. If you were watching William Hart's silent western Tumbleweeds -- sure enough, he would play the hit song "Tumbleweeds" as the credits rolled.

It is short notice, but tomorrow, before our screening of Greta Garbo's Love, we will have a short memorial for Bob.

This club is fantastic! I would love to join.
Two of my favorite movies are Nosferatu (I watch it very often), and The Godless Girl.

Hey there. Been gone forever and a day, but I finally read the note you sent back in 2006.
Of course you can have the Clara Bow I did, and, yes, I would like to join. I would have responded with the note system, but apparently I am forbidden from using it, whatever that means.
Thanks for the invite! Though I don't know how to join, sadly. O.o

so i finally found the silent version of phantom of the opera. i couldnt belive it! i found it at this store called american pop which is near where i live in royal oak. the store is really cool its alsmost like a garage sale but with stuff you actually would want to buy. anyways i was just scanning through the dvd section they had and i saw it and of course i had to get it. I ended up watching it last night and i have to say its the funniest version of phantom of the opera ive ever watched. lon chaney is really great in it.I personally like this one more then nasfuratu.
